The Secretariat of the WTO is seeking to fill a position of Legal/Economic Affairs Officer in the Knowledge and Information Management, Academic Outreach and the WTO Chairs Programme.

This is an "L-post". L-posts are funded through extra-budgetary funds and the contract is renewed on a yearly basis with the possibility of extension up to a total of maximum four years, subject to availability of funds and incumbent's level of performance.

The Academic Outreach and WTO Chairs Programme section serves as a focal point for the Organization's collaboration with academic institutions, implementing the WTO's academic outreach activities, inter alia, through the WTO Chairs Programme, aimed at fostering research, training, and outreach activities relating to international trade in 35 beneficiary institutions, as well as through the PhD fellowship programme.

General Functions

Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Division and reporting to the Head of the WTO Academic Outreach Section, the candidate is expected to make substantial contributions to all aspects of the WTO Academic Outreach activities.

Key functions include :

  1. Assist in the implementation of academic outreach programmes in collaboration with representatives of academic institutions, WTO Secretariat colleagues and Geneva delegations of beneficiary Members. This includes detailed review of research, teaching and outreach project proposals relating to the multilateral trading system in the light of current topics and trends in negotiations. 
  2. Contribute to the preparation of activities involving beneficiaries at the WTO and at partner institutions participating in the WTO's outreach programmes.
  3. Collect and process information reporting on such activities for purposes of monitoring and evaluation.
  4. Contribute to the conceptual development of academic outreach programmes.
  5. Carry out other relevant work of the section, including the preparation of briefing notes, memoranda, speaking points, and reports.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

  • Advanced university degree in economics, law, international relations or another relevant field.

Technical Knowledge and Skills :

  • Knowledge and understanding of the multilateral trading system and current topics and trends in negotiations.
  • Excellent drafting skills to be able to prepare reports, speeches, briefing notes, background papers and other correspondence for different audiences, including senior management.
  • Experience in operating projects from initiation to closeout stages, including reporting and M&E.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and other relevant applications.

Behavioural skills :

  • The following interpersonal capabilities are required : Time management and prioritization skills; working swiftly and accurately under the pressure of deadlines, paying close attention to the detail. Ability to work independently as well as cooperate with others in a diverse international setting as a member of a team. Ability to communicate complex abstract ideas to an audience of informed people and understand ideas when communicated by others. Political sensitivity and awareness, tact, and diplomacy. Ability to initiate and build relationships with various stakeholders and partners. Ability to adhere rigorously to rules of conduct ensuring confidentiality, impartiality, and an absence of conflicts of interest.

Work Experience :

  • A minimum of two years of professional experience in the area of international trade, in academia, Governmental Institutions and/or International Organisations.

Languages :

  • Excellent knowledge of English (at a level corresponding or equivalent to a minimum of C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)) is required, including the ability to draft accurately, concisely and rapidly. Good knowledge of at least one of the other two WTO knowledge languages (French and Spanish - minimum B2 of the CEFR) is an advantage.

  • For non-entry level positions, the position may be offered at a lower grade if the selected candidate does not fully meet all the required qualifications. 
  • Should the successful candidate hold a regular or fixed-term contract under the regular WTO budget, the contractual status shall be changed to a one or two-year fixed-term contract in accordance with the contractual arrangement set out in the vacancy notice. 
  • The WTO may use various communication technologies such as video or teleconference for the assessment and evaluation of candidates. The recruitment process may also involve the use of various forms of testing, assessment centres, interviews and reference checks. 
  • Applicants may be required to sit a written examination. 
  • Applicants will be contacted directly if selected for an interview. 

Candidates not selected whose performance in the selection process nevertheless shows them to be suitable for a similar position may be kept on a roster for up to 24 months, and may subsequently be called upon as and when the need arises for additional resources.

The Secretariat of the WTO is seeking to fill a position of Welcome Officer in the Office of the Director-General.

This is an External Vacancy Notice open to external candidates and WTO staff. It is posted on the WTO internal as well as external career site. Eligible WTO staff on short-term, fixed-term or regular contracts and interns must apply through the Workday internal career site.

This is a Fixed-term contract funded through the regular budget. The duration will be two years with the possibility of extension. 

General Functions

Under the supervision of the Chief of Staff, the incumbent will perform the following tasks :

  1. Welcome delegates, visitors and guests including VIPs coming to the WTO for meetings, appointments or visits, ensuring a pleasant experience while at the WTO.
  2. Plan, prepare and provide the specific services required for each meeting, event and visit, as per the demands and expectations of organizers, delegates, visitors and guests.
  3. Coordinate work and actions to be undertaken with other services including security, protocol, transportation and facility management.
  4. Provide office support, safety & security assistance for the Office of the Director-General as required.
  5. Provide any other assistance to the Chief of Staff and other staff in the Office of the Director-General when required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

  • Completed   secondary    education    and/or   equivalent   technical or commercial school.

Knowledge and Skills :

Technical Knowledge and Skills :

  • Basic knowledge of the work of the WTO Secretariat.
  • General knowledge of security and protocol matters in international and government organizations.
  • Familiarity with the WTO and its infrastructures would be an asset. 
  • Good memory for faces.

Behavioural Skills :

  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Tact and discretion.
  • Willingness to be flexible with regard to working hours as dictated by work demands and schedules.

The following interpersonal capabilities are required: ability to relate to and build relationships with colleagues; ability to communicate information in a clear way and to understand information; ability to face and cope with conflict situations with colleagues; and ability to work as a member of a team, relating to others, while working independently to achieve his/her objectives.

Work Experience :

  • At least two years of experience in the area concerned. Experience in an international organization would be an advantage.

Languages :

  • Proficient level of English. A working level of French would be considered an advantage. Skills in Spanish would be an asset.
